CV is an acronym for curriculum vitae, others refer to is as a resume. The best first step to getting your dream job is to write a CV format that potential employers will be highly interested in, on that can move him to reason from your line of thought.
Most people keep searching for the best CV format to write, but the truth remains that there is nothing like the best CV format. The success of the CV is dependent on the mood and discretion of the employer, the only thing you can do is to present a very well formatted CV that will represent you well even in your absence.
BEST CV FORMAT IN NIGERIA FOR ALL JOB SEEKERS
There are tons of CV format out there for both the fresh graduates, the experienced and the skilled, and based on this, I will be picking out three CV format that are sure to ease your way through the job search period.
SKILLED BASED CV FORMAT
This is my preferred CV format because of the emphasis it lays on the importance of gaining skills to increase your chance of getting a job.
Here you start with or lay more emphasis on your skill set. This may include self-taught, computer programming skills, special abilities that will give you an edge over other applicants. It is even better if the skills are related to the job you are applying for.
EDUCATIONAL BASED CV FORMAT
This is the CV format fresh graduate are likely to use the most, since most of them have limited skill set and experiences, they tend to rely on their on educational performance to get jobs.
This format is also great in applying for educational and professional jobs as they are mostly interested in your line of study and educational prowess.
EXPERIENCED BASED CV FORMAT
Here the CV format is based on the experienced gathered over time, you have to list them from the latest to the oldest, including all your achievement.
You should realize that the three may not work in all industries and scenario, so you may need to always tailor your CV format to the requirements of the respective employers.
INFORMATION NEEDED IN YOUR GENERAL CV FORMAT
There are some information that must appear in all of your CV and then you format them according to the type of CV you wish to achieve.
- CONTACT INFORMATION
This is the first section of your CV and should contain your name, phone number and email addresses. You have to format this section properly to make it stand out as it is the first part to be seen.
It is your identity, but please do not attach any pictures here, your email addresses should be very professional and coined form a combination of your names.
Use a very clear font and black color, let it stand out in size too.
- EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
This the section that contains your education and qualifications with the highest one should be coming foremost followed by the lesser ones in that descending order.
Write out each institution, degree and certificate obtained and the duration each took. You have to be precise and certain here. Qualifications like ICAN, ACA, MBA, ACCA, MSc, BSc, HND etc. will suffice.
You can list special academic achievement maybe a very high G.P. or best student’s award.
- WORK EXPERIENCE
This is the section of the CV where you input all the jobs you have done and work experience garnered overtime, this is a special part and you must be sincere without hiding or skipping out facts.
You have to start with the foremost or your current job down to oldest while listing all the types of experience you gathered and the duration you spent on the job.
You should also state the position held and all your achievement and goals achieved as this will also prove beneficial to you in the long run.
- SKILLS SET
You must have accumulated several skills and this is the section you fill them in. They may not really relate to the job at hand but having them in the CV might spring up other discussions during the interview exercise.
What do you love to eat? What special ability have you got? What do you do so well? That can set you apart from others. You have to list them here and be brief as you do.
You have to go beyond the normal like reading, writing, travelling … add something daunting and this could be the game changer.
- BIO-DATA/PERSONAL DATA
This is where some other of your personal information should appear in the CV format, information like age, religion, marital status, state of origin and the likes.
I really do not fancy this section a lot as it may serve as a huge disadvantage in some situation, but for transparency, you need to include it and hope for the best.
This should appear at the tail end so we can allow our skills, education, qualification and experience take all the shine.
- AWARDS/ HONORS/ ACHIEVEMENT
This is for show off but it can and will endear you to the HR personnel or interviewer. Have you been a recipient of any special award or recognition for work done or as a reward for your effort towards something beneficial to others? Then this is your spot.
Ever published a book or done something charitable, why not put them in the CV too.
Some employers need you to state your referees though sometimes you can list them as available on request, but just put them in to save time and increase your chance.
Use higher professionals like lectures or older members of your family and make sure you inform them of the honor you just allotted to them.

MORE TIPS TO WRITING A GREAT CV FORMAT
- Your font should be clear and readable. It is better to use font size 12 for normal text and 16 for sub headings, use times new romans or verdana as your font when typing the CV.
- Use simple and easy to understand words to rule out ambiguity and vagueness, you want to be understood in the proper context.
- Do not let your CV exceed two pages to increase its readability and not bore the HR personnel or interviewer.
- Ensure that all the information entered into the CV can defended by you or a witness, you need to be seen as an honest person.
- It is better to have your CV formatted in pdf or .docx formats and the file size should not exceed 1mb.
- Be accountable for all your time duration in your CV relating to education, working and jobs.
- Try to paint yourself as very humble and submissive.
